P.S. Keep records of exactly how much you pay in estimated taxes; your tax accountant needs this to prepare your return accurately. ✍️

Before you check which bracket your income falls into and start panicking, just remember that the U.S. has a progressive tax system!

That means that not ALL of your income is taxed at the rate of your highest tax bracket.

I had a new client start working with Pet Biz Advisors in 2025 after they got hit with a huge tax bill last year...

Here's what we did to take their tax bill from WAY TOO HIGH to manageable within a year:

→ Worked with TransFURmational Bookkeeping to review their books and ensure records were accurate.

→ Adjusted their quarterly tax payments to meet the safe harbor threshold (aka no more underpayment penalties + interest).

→ Optimized their grooming business to maximize their QBI deduction.

If you're worried you're paying too much in taxes, we need to talk. I'm here to help pet groomers run tax-efficient businesses!

If you sell your primary residence for a gain, that's considered TAXABLE income!

But, using these two strategies, you can significantly lower your tax bill even if you *technically* made money on the sale.

Here's how: ↓

1️⃣ Capital Gains Exclusion

Generally, if you've lived in your primary residence for at least 2 of the last 5 years, you can exclude up to $500k (MFJ) or $250k (filing single) of your GAIN.

2️⃣ Cost Basis Improvements

If you make major improvements to your home that increase your cost basis, you can reduce your taxable gain on the sale of your home.

Okay, let's put it all together:

Say you and your spouse buy a house for $500k and add $50k in qualifying improvements. Your cost basis in the home is now $550k.

If you live in that home for 4 years, and then you sell it for $800k, you have a gain of $250k.

The capital gains exclusion that you qualify for is $500k, which fully covers your capital gain (aka you're paying no federal income taxes on that gain).

Before you go full Santa-mode on your clients this holiday season, here's how to stay off the IRS's naughty list when it comes to client gifts! ↓

🎁 You can only deduct up to $25 per client per year.

🎁 Incidental costs (like shipping, engraving, etc.) that don't add significant value to the gift don't count towards the $25 limit.

🎁 Keep records documenting a description of the gift, the amount, the date of the gift, who you're giving the gift to, and your business relationship with them.

PSA: You've got to take action by December 31, 2025 if you want to take advantage of either of these tax credits:

→ Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit

→ Residential Clean Energy Credit

For both of these credits, the qualifying improvement or property must be installed and placed in service 12/31/25.

I get this question a lot in December... people aren't happy when their bonus paycheck looks different from what they expected!

Whether you're the employee (or the employer needing to explain), here's what probably happened: ↓

While bonuses are subject to income tax just like your wages, they can sometimes be withheld differently (which is what shows up on your paycheck!).

For example, many employers will use the percentage method to calculate a flat 22% withholding on bonuses under $1 million.

Here's what confuses people: If your tax rate is lower than 22%, you may have more tax withheld than needed from your bonus.

In this case, you'll receive that money back when you file your tax return.

If you use your Amazon Prime membership exclusively for qualifying business expenses (aka ordinary + necessary costs to run your business), you've got a pretty good argument to write it off!

For example, if you purchase Prime because you're constantly ordering new office supplies from Amazon for your business and you need them delivered quickly, you're good.

But, here's where things get tricky:

If you purchase things for your personal life (like groceries or birthday gifts) using your Amazon Prime membership, you'll need to allocate the cost based on what percentage is used for business vs. personal purposes.

PRO TIP: Use an Amazon Business Prime account if you need it for your business to keep things clean + separate!
